English“The Rye Tale” session: straw ‘gardens’ and ornaments at your school
Educational programme
Crafts Venue by agreement · Lithuania +370 600 49376 mitologiniubutybiu@gmail.com
Description
The educator comes to a place of your choice and introduces straw ‘gardens’ (sodai) and straw ornaments, one of the most mysterious items of Lithuanian folk art. Younger children see the most interesting examples and hear what they symbolise; with older pupils the talk goes deeper into their origins, the holidays they were made for and the journey of rye straw from the field to the ornament. In the practical part everyone makes a straw ornament of the shape they choose.
