Description

The Pabiržė folk ensemble “Žemyna” is a group of families who have been making music together since 1997 and was awarded Category I status in 2024. The ensemble performs sutartines from the northeastern Aukštaitija region, sings polyphonic songs, plays traditional instruments such as the kapela, kanklės, skudučiai, and horns, and performs traditional dances from their region. The members gathered most of their repertoire from elders in the Pabiržė, Gulbinai, Kirdonys, and Užubaliai areas. The ensemble is led by ethnomusicologist Aušra Butkauskienė.
